DIY: Rainbow Spring tshirt! Tuto: T-shirt de printemps arc-en-ciel !

To celebrate the Spring we made a rainbow flower t-shirt.
Pour célébrer le printemps, nous avons décider de peindre un t-shirt aux couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel.

What you need / De quoi avez-vous besoin

• an (organic, of course! ;)) blank t-shirt /un t-shirt (bio, bien sûr ! ;)) sans décoration
• some freezer paper / du papier de boucher
• an inkjet printer / une imprimante jet d'encre
• an X-acto knife / un cutter
• waterbased fabric paint in different colors (we use Permaset paints) / de la peinture acrilique pour tissus 
• a small container filled with water to clean the paintbushes / un verre d'eau pour nettoyer les pinceaux
• a paint brush / un pinceau
• an iron (to heat-set the paint) / un fer à repasser

How to / Comment faire

Cut a sheet of freezer paper the size of a regular Letter size paper. Print the pattern on the non-shiny side.
Trace the flower borders carefully with an X-acto knife and remove the petals and the heart of the flower.
Coupez la taille d'une feuille A4 and le papier de boucher. Imprimer le modèle sur la partie non-brillante. 
Suivre les traits au cutter afin d'évider la fleur.

Set the iron on low temperature and iron the shiny side of the paper on the t-shirt. If you misplace it you can always peel it off and iron again.
Place another sheet of freezer paper under the pattern to make sure that the paint won't stain the back of the t-shirt.
Faire chauffer le fer à repasser à température douce et repasser la partie brillante contre le t-shirt pour la faire adhérer. Si vous vous trompez, décollez le papier et recoller le papier.
Placez une autre feuille de papier de boucher de l'autre côté du motif (à l'intérieur du t-shirt) afin de protéger le dos.

Paint carefully the flower with your kids. 
Peignez la fleur avec vos enfants.

When you are done peel off the paper. You can touch up the paint if you are not completely satisfied.
And voilà!
Lorque vous avez fini, décollez le papier. Vous pouvez faire des retouches si nécessaire. 
Et voilà !

Let it dry overnight of use a hairdryer if you can't wait.
Laisser sécher une nuit ou utiliser le sèche-cheveux si vous ne pouvez pas attendre. 
 
On the following day, set the paint with an iron. I usually iron the design for 2mn with the iron set on wool. Make sure to cover all areas and best of all do not burn the fabric.
Le lendemain, fixez la peinture avec un fer à repasser. En général je repasse une zone pendant 2mn à une température laine. Faites bien attention à fixer toutes les zones et à ne pas brûler votre tissus.

Telling a story

I love to tell stories to my kids, but it is more difficult to tell a story on this blog or in my Etsy shop in a language that is not my mother tongue. For some reason I always have the feeling that my brain is so much less creative when I start to think in another language than French.

So let's make a try! :) This morning I published a new item in my Etsy shop. I prepared the listing yesterday, and decided to change it after I read Nicolas' post on The AGteam blog. He is so right! Stories are so fun to read and will give an item a life and a soul!
The item is a little bandana bib made with an organic fabric that I absolutely had to use. In general I try to avoid anything related to movies, comics or books. But this fabric is a special one, it represents Truffula trees from the Dr Seuss' Lorax book.

This book tells the story of a man, the "Once-ler" who brings a tree species to extinction and destroys a beautiful area while making himself go from the heights of success to solitude and sadness. It is an old book but it is beautifully written and drawn, and unfortunately more to the point than ever. We read it very often to our kids and it has become one of their favorite. Hopefully they will be some day belong to those who will care for the Earth. ;)

DIY: Eco Friendly Halloween Witch Hat for Kids Tuto: Chapeau de Sorcier Ecologique pour Enfants

Every single year my kids ask me for a new witch hat for Halloween, the former one being too small. And every year I make a larger hat to fit their new head size. These hats are all well loved, still they are all still alive and in good shape, even after two kids using them all year long to dress up. They are really fun to make and so much healthier for the kids and the environment than the cheap synthetic one you can find in stores.
Here is my recipe: :)

Tous les ans, mes enfants me demandent un nouveau chapeau de socier pour Halloween, le précédent étant devenu trop petit. Et tous les ans je leur couds un nouveau chapeau un peu plus grand qui leur servira tout au long de l'année pour se déguiser. Ils sont tellement sympa à faire et plus sains pour vos enfants (et la planète !) que vous ne regretterez pas votre temps passé. 

Voici ma recette. :)

What you need / De quoi avez-vous besoin

• 1yd wool felt (size 3) / 1m de feutre de laine (taille 3)
  3/4yd wool felt (size 2) / 75cm de feutre de laine (taille 2)
  1/2yd wool felt (size 1) / 60cm de feutre de laine (taille 1)
• matching thread / du fil assorti
• needles / des aiguilles
• a sewing machine / une machine à coudre
• a serger or some matching bias tape/ un surfilleuse ou du biais assorti
• scisors / une paire de ciseaux

Pattern / Patron
Sorry if this time I used centimeters. For small and precise measurements they make so much more sense to me. I'm sure that you will either find a metric ruler or just Google to convert into inches. :)

Size 1: up to 48 cm head circumference (jusqu'à 48 cm de tour de tête)
Size 2: up to 51 cm head circumference (jusqu'à 51cm de tour de tête)
Size 3: up to 55 cm head circumference (jusqu'à 55 cm de tour de tête)

How to / Comment faire
Trace the pattern on some paper.

Tracez le patron sur du papier.

Place on the fabric and cut 1x the point and 3x the brim (x2 for size 1). The thickness of the brim will allow you to avoid interfacing (contains dangerous formaldehyde.)

Coupez le tissus d'après le patron que vous venez de fabriquer : 1x la pointe du chapeau, 3x le bord (x2 pour la taille 1). Ces épaisseurs vous pemettront d'éviter d'utiliser une bande thermocollante sachant que toutes ces colles contiennent des formaldehydes dangeureux pour la santé.

Pin both straight sides of the point together and sew (1cm seam allowance). Put it right side out. You can use a knitting needle or chop sticks to push the pointy end.

Épinglez les deux côtés droits de la pointe du chapeau ensemble et coudre à 1cm du bord. Retournez. Vous pouvez utiliser une aiguille à tricoter ou une baguette chinoise pour finir de retourner la pointe.

Pin all brims layers together and serge the outer part (you can also use some bias tape if you don't have a serger or use the zigzag stich of your sewing machine).

Epinglez les différentes couches du bord du chapeau et surfiler le bord externe. Si vous ne possedez pas de surfileuse, vous pouvez également utiliser un biais assorti,. Vous pouvez aussi utilisez le point zigzag de votre machine à coudre.

Pin the point to the brim. Sew 1 cm away from the seam.

Epinglez le bord intérieur du chapeau avec le pointe. Coudre à 1cm du bord.

Remove all needles and you're done!!! Easy, isn't it?

Retirez toutes les aiguilles et voilà c'est fini !!! C'est pas sorcier, non ?

Upcycled cardboard Carton recyclé

At the moment, my kids won't let me bring a cardboard box right away to the recycling. They love their potential to easily built new games and toys.

A few days ago we borrowed this book at the public library. The kids loved it at first sight and decided that they had to build their own house on fire.

En ce moment les enfants ne me laissent pas l'occasion d'emmener une seule boite en carton directement au recyclage. Ils adorent leur potentiel pour faire facilement de nouveaux jeux et jouets.

Il y a quelques jours, nous avons emrpunté un liver à la bibliothèque. Les enfants l'ont tout de suite adoré et ont décidé qu'il me fallait contruire leur propre maison en feu comme dans l'histoire.

Even if we don't have a cat like the little boy in the story, the kids spent the whole afternoon playing with their wooden firetruck and rescuing their plushes from the flames.

Même si nous n'avons pas de chat comme dans l'histoire, les enfants ont passé leur après-midi à jouer avec leur camion de pompier en bois à sauver leurs pelluches des flammes.

Vacation time is over! Les vacances sont finies !

Our summer has been so busy with the kids at home that I haven't found the time to update this blog. Sorry for that.
For the most part of it, we traveled to France to visit our family. The kids had a wonderful time with their grandparents and cousins. They ate tons of crepes and galettes, help gather organic fruits and veggies in the garden. They went to the beach, run free and play with the waves, collected sea shells and built sand castles.

Notre été à été tellement occupé avec les enfants à la maison que je n'ai même pas trouvé le temps de mettre à jour ce blog. Désolée. 

Nous avons essentiellement visité nos familles dans l'ouest de la France. Les enfants ont passé de merveilleux moments avec leurs grands parents et leurs cousines. Ils ont mangé des tonnes de crêpes et galettes, ont aidé à récolter des fruits et des légumes bio du jardin. Ils sont aussi allés à la plage, ont couru et joué dans les vagues à cœur joie, ramassé des coquillages et construit des châteaux de sable.

We went to pleasant music festivals.

Nous sommes allés à des festivals de musique très sympathiques.

They also got to see monuments that are only available in old Europe and started to get a sens of history. They got to visit a huge middle-age castle, actually a castle that was right next to my elementary school when I was a child. Imagine that one the limit of the school yard was the castle itself!

Ils ont aussi vu des monuments qui n’existent que dans la vieille Europe et ont commencé à appréhender ce qu'est l'histoire. Ils ont ainsi pu visiter un très grand château fort, en fait le château qui était presque dans la cour de mon école primaire lorsque j'étais enfant. Imaginez qu'un des murs de la cour était constitué par l'enceinte du château !

They became immediately fan of knights and castles and had to have their own. :)

Bien évidemment, ils sont immédiatement devenus fan de chevaliers et de châteaux forts et ont réclamé le leur. :)

They had a wonderful time and so did we!

Ils ont passé un merveilleux moment et nous aussi !

Most preschoolers I know love to play with running water, use tones of paper and craft supplies. They also have a hard time understanding when they are told that we won't buy plastic toys (not to mention those with batteries.) This is what we went through with our kids until I read this post from the EtsyEarth team's blog (one of my Etsy teams). I decided to give it a try and bought The Lorax and after a little research Where does the garbage go.

La plupart des jeunes enfants que je connais adorent jouer avec l'eau, utiliser des tonnes de papier et fournitures. Ils ont aussi du mal à comprendre pourquoi nous ne voulons pas acheter de jouets en plastique (je ne parle même pas des piles). Nous sommes passés par là avec nos enfants jusqu'à ce que je lise cet article posté sur le blog de l'équipe EtsyEarth (une de mes équipes Etsy). J'ai décidé de tenter le coup et j'ai acheté The Lorax et après quelques recherches Where does the garbage go. Deux livres parlant l'un de la pollution et de l'usage abusif des ressources et l'autre du traitement des ordures.

 
I still can't believe it worked! Both books became immediately among their favorites for the evening story time! And in no time my 5yo had become eco-savvy and even decided that we wanted to clean the Earth. :) We now have to carry a bag to gather all the trash he founds on the sidewalks. OK, I'm not really thrilled about this last part, but I don't think he would understand if I told him not to. We make sure that he washes his hands thoroughly as soon as we get home. It finally clicked because picture and stories are so much more powerful than words. They finally got to understand that the Earth is not that big and that we all have to take care of it. I'm completely aware that they are fairly young and that we have a long road ahead of us, but I'm still pretty pleased with this first step.

Je n'en reviens toujours pas que ça ait marché! Les deux livres sont devenus immédiatement parmis leurs préférés pour l'histoire du soir ! Et en un rien de temps mon grand de 5 ans s'est mis à faire attention et a même décidé de nettoyer la terre. :) Maintenant nous devons nous promener partout avec un sac pour stocker les détritus qu'il trouve sur le trottoir. OK, je ne suis si emballée que ça par cette dernière partie, mais je ne crois pas qu'il comprendrait si je lui demandais de ne pas le faire. Nous veillons à ce qu'il se lave bien les mains en arrivant à la maison. Ça a fini par marcher parce que les images et les histoires sont tellement plus puissantes que les mots. Ils ont compris que notre terre n'est pas si grande et que nous devons tous en prendre soin. J'ai pleinement conscience qu'ils sont très jeunes et qu'une longue route est devant nous, mais je ne peux m'empêcher d'être très satisfaite de cette première étape.
